Cleaning up after flu and colds

Cleaning up after flu and colds

In the midst of February frost, it’s not uncommon to get cold feet, frostbite, or accidentally find yourself near a carrier of influenza infection. And unfortunately, sometimes our home becomes a “quarantine zone” with a sneezing patient in bed, a pile of handkerchiefs, a pyramid of medicines and other painfully familiar details. The day of final recovery is beautiful — but don’t forget that there are still battalions of germs marching through the house! So, let’s clean the house during and after colds and flu!

Let’s start with the bedding. The patient sweats a lot while lying in bed. Try using two or three sheets instead of one: it is much easier to wash them later than to clean the whole mattress. The extra sheet will help absorb excess moisture. You can also use an extra pillowcase for the same purpose.

As soon as the disease is gone, immediately send the linen to the wash at high temperature — this will kill the bacteria. And the mattress, if possible, should be ventilated in the fresh air.

Now let’s sanitize things that were used during the disease. Laptop, smartphone, TV remote, door handles, switches — all this should be treated with a reliable antibacterial agent. You don’t want dangerous germs to be transmitted to your loved ones through these frequently used items, do you? Use an alcohol solution to clean your keyboard, tablet and phone.

Why not have a nice draft? Even if it’s not hot outside your window, you should thoroughly air out your home after an illness. Let fresh air penetrate into every corner and take away all traces of illness. Perhaps, for this you will have to wear a fur coat and an ushanka hat, but it is worth it!

Let’s move to the bathroom. It’s time to send the towels and bathrobes that were used during the illness to the wash. Remember, the washing temperature should be as high as possible! Then disinfect all surfaces, pay special attention to the plumbing and the trash can. It is not necessary to use caustic purchased means: you can simply prepare a 50% alcohol or vinegar solution. The final touch: soak your toothbrushes in hydrogen peroxide for half an hour. Don’t give bacteria a chance!

What about the kitchen? You’ve obviously spent less time here than usual during your illness. And yet the public path to the fridge, kettle and microwave never goes away under any circumstances! Which means it’s worth sanitizing surfaces, handles and taps. Hint: Dishes are better washed in the dishwasher (or just do it very thoroughly).

Now it’s just a matter of remembering the clothes! As you can guess, all clothes that were worn during the illness should be thoroughly washed at the highest temperature. That’s why you should not be sick in lace negligees, which will not survive washing at a temperature of more than 30 degrees!

You may ask: is the only way to avoid over-infection is to disinfect the entire house, top to bottom? The answer is simple: no, and the above tips are more of a “maximum program”. In fact, even a routine cleaning will get rid of most of the pathogenic bacteria. Besides, bacteria don’t live long. According to studies, they die on surfaces after about 48 hours (although some flu viruses survive longer). Still, colds and flu are highly transmissible through objects and through the air, so try to wash your hands more often and avoid touching your face. Yes, yes, it’s just like your mom told you from childhood.
